All the essay topics contain at least one sub-question asking you to make connections between the past and present in some way, which is a critical learning objective for this course.
A simple Works Cited page containing all of your sources must be provided at the end of your paper.
What were some concerns that the American Indian Movement sought to address when they first formed in 1968? Who was at least one prominent leader of AIM and what was at least one significant protest action they were involved with (aside from Alcatraz)? Related, what were the Indians of All Tribes (IOAT) activists who occupied Alcatraz Island beginning in 1969 hoping to achieve and what was the outcome of their protest? How have any of these concerns been addressed since 1968 and what are the general conditions of Native American reservations today?
What were a few significant events, legal decisions, and presidential interventions that launched the African American Civil Rights movement during the 1950s? In the 1960s, how were Martin Luther King’s ideals of nonviolence and civil disobedience challenged by other African American activists, and which approach was most effective in the long run? Which of these contrasting attitudes or tactics has most influenced contemporary social justice activism?
What were the stated justifications for the United States committing troops to Korea in 1950 and to Vietnam in the 1960s? Why had these two nations been divided by two and who represented each side? What were the general outcomes of the two wars and how do they correlate with Korean and Vietnamese relations with the United States today?
Each Topic is approximately 350 words.
Topic questions are provided at the top of each essay. Paper is clearly organized into 3 separate essays.
