Instructions for the Review Paper
The paper should be at least 5 double spaced pages (not including the title page), with 1 inch margins and a 12 point font. It should be based on the review of 2 (two) articles that you found on a selected topic in Child Psychology. Please remember that I will need to approve your topic before you can begin working on the paper. You should provide me with your topic via e-mail, and then wait for my approval or suggestions
How to Write the Paper: You should write a paper with the following sections in this order:
Summary of the articles reviewed
Except for the Title page, I want you to indicate (write) the name of each section when it begins. You should begin with a TITLE PAGE that includes a title and your name.
Next you should write an ABSTRACT. The abstract is a summary of your entire paper. It gives the reason for writing the paper, including the rationale behind it, a statement about the results of the papers you are reviewing and a statement about the conclusion you are deriving from them. The abstract is written last, even though it appears first. Until you have written the article and reviewed everything that you have to say in the article, you cannot summarize it.
On a new page write the INTRODUCTION section, where you are introducing the topic. The introduction reviews the relevant previous research in the field, and states the specific question(s) of the study, or the specific hypotheses the study will confirm or disconfirm. A good introduction sets up a particular problem and tells the reader why that problem is important.
The next section should be a SUMMARY OF THE ARTICLES you are reviewing. Each article should be summarized separately. You may start with the title and appropriate citation of the article and then a summary of it. A DISCUSSION section comes next. It summarizes all the findings, sets them in a theoretical context (first set in the introduction), and discusses the significance and implications of the results. Any problematic aspect of the results is also brought up and dealt with.
Finally there should be a REFERENCES section. All studies referred to in the paper are cited in full in the reference section. Different journals have different citation procedures. When in doubt, use APA conventions. Your textbook uses APA style for the references; use them as a model.
All references must include the following information: the author(s) of the article (last name and first and middle initials), the title of the article, the title of the journal or book in which the article appeared, the editors of the book if the article appeared in a book, the volume number and page numbers if the article appeared in a journal. For books, the place of publication and the publisher are also cited.
