GROWTH AND FIXED MINDSETS
It is likely that you can think of aspects of your life in which you exhibit a growth mindset, as well as those in which you tend to exhibit more of a fixed mindset. But, in general, which do you feel better aligns with your natural tendencies? There is no right or wrong answer to the question, but knowing the answer can help you to better understand how you tend to approach situations, as well as identify opportunities for you to grow and expand your mindset to accommodate new possibilities—both for your own benefit and for the benefit of organizations of which you are a part. One example of an organization that benefited from adopting more of a growth mindset is Microsoft. The company’s leadership team felt that incorporating a growth mindset was foundational to its culture and took measured steps to encourage its development by creating multimedia presentations and managerial conversation guides to support employees. It was discovered that this attribute was a key factor in promoting other aspects of the company’s desired culture as well, such as customer focus and diversity and inclusion (Derler & Baer, 2019). With a stronger understanding of growth and fixed mindsets, you can use this knowledge to have a positive impact on your organization.
In this Discussion, you will explore your relationship with and the benefits/challenges of growth and fixed mindsets, including what their impact could be on an organization.
Post an analysis of the benefits and challenges of having a growth mindset as opposed to having a fixed mindset. In your analysis, do the following:
Describe at least one example of an area of your life in which you exhibit a growth mindset and at least one example of an area in which you exhibit a fixed mindset.
Examine the benefits of each type of mindset, as well as the challenges that each presents.

KTL: In this week’s discussion, I would like to express my perspective on having a growth mindset. I strongly believe that all of us participating in this class are embodying a growth mindset by actively pursuing our MBA degree. As described by Dweck in 2016, individuals who hold the belief that their talents can be developed through persistent effort, strategic planning, and seeking external guidance demonstrate a growth mindset. By committing ourselves to this educational journey and embracing the challenges it presents, we are embodying the qualities of a growth mindset and embracing the opportunity for personal and professional growth.
Encouraging a growth mindset within an organization brings several advantages, such as fostering continuous learning and growth, promoting the generation of new ideas, cultivating synergies, enhancing empowerment and commitment, and fostering collaboration for innovation. The concept of curiosity and creativity, along with a willingness to explore, is crucial for organizations to remain competitive. In our previous discussion on innovation, we highlighted the close relationship between innovation and a growth mindset. Without a growth mindset, it becomes challenging for organizations to adapt to new technologies, ideas, and processes necessary for progress and success. To ensure sustainability, leadership within any organization needs to embrace a growth mindset. This mindset fosters a culture of coaching, creating opportunities for insights and innovation to flourish (Kristjansson, 2016). Constantly pushing for new ideas can sometimes have a negative impact. Leaders need to be mindful of cultivating such culture by understanding different people face challenges differently.
In my previous employment, I can identify an instance where I exhibited a fixed mindset. I had devoted my loyalty to a specific role that I felt comfortable in, and I held the belief that my skills were innate and unchangeable. Consequently, I avoided taking on challenging tasks or initiatives that fell outside my primary area of expertise. Unfortunately, this limited my potential for career advancement, as I refrained from embracing opportunities for growth. My reluctance to lead initiatives stemmed from a fear of failure, which ultimately hindered my ability to develop and improve in areas that were not initially my strong suit.
Having a fixed mindset can be appropriate and valuable in certain situations. Organizations that are focused on repetitive tasks and require stability and familiarity may benefit from expertise that avoids unnecessary challenges and maintains consistency. In such cases, individuals with specialized skills and knowledge can contribute by staying fixed in their established approaches.
However, it is crucial to recognize that these perceived benefits of a fixed mindset are temporary and may hinder long-term growth, development, and adaptability. Embracing a growth mindset, on the other hand, brings numerous advantages in terms of continuous personal and professional growth, resilience, learning, and fostering innovation. References:

JJ: Exhibiting a Growth Mindset and Fixed Mindset
Having a growth mindset has been crucial in my work environment. When I first entered this field, I had certain talents but did not know much. I had to rely on “hard work, good strategies and input from others” (Dweck, 2016) in order to develop. I had certain strengths but needed to continue to grow in order to succeed in my career.
Today, I still exhibit a growth mindset in my career. This is the case, because the talent that I have now has only come about because of the things that I have learned and the mentors that I have gained while in this position. None of this is based on my “innate gifts” (Dweck, 2016).
There is another area of my life where I exhibit a fixed mindset. When it pertains to playing basketball, I believe either I have it or I don’t. I have always believed that I do not have what it takes to be good at playing basketball, nor can I develop those skills through training. I believe that there are certain talents one must have in order to be a good basketball player. Those are skills that I do not believe I possess.
Benefits and Challenges of Growth and Fixed Mindsets
Having a growth mindset can be beneficial in that one is able to challenge oneself and not limit oneself to grow beyond their innate abilities. One benefit of a fixed mindset is that it “helps you realize that sometimes you need to take care of certain responsibilities, even if you don’t want to do them. It helps you with fitting into the world and the ways of society” (Sidhu, 2020).
One challenge of a growth mindset is when “…you let learning become a form of procrastination. The problem is when the pursuit of “growth” becomes analysis paralysis” (Kruse, 2019). An individual with a growth mindset believes that they are able to learn and grow in any situation, this can cause them to continuously work on a project, spending more time than necessary. A challenge of having a fixed mindset is that one can become complacent and not believe that they can do more than they are innately capable of doing.
My Growth Mindset
I typically have a growth mindset. I rarely believe that I cannot learn something or grow in a specific area. When faced with a challenge, I often try to find ways to troubleshoot and fix the issue. This has been shown in my daily life. I was once told that I was not creative, and instead of accepting that, I exposed myself to people and situations that would challenge my creativity. The same individual who once told me that I wasn’t creative, is now praising me for my ideas.
My growth mindset can assist me with pushing forward in my organization. It will allow me to embrace failure, and use mistakes as opportunities for growth and it will give my organization a better chance of success.
