ENG 102: ASSIGNMENT 2: RESEARCHED ARGUMENT
For this paper, you will formulate a thesis of your own about the topic you have chosen and researched, and use sources to develop, support and test your thesis. The paper should be no less than 8 pages double spaced and should utilize at least 10 sources (many of which will come from paper 1).
Finding a thesis:
• You are free to make any kind of claim about the issue. You must keep in mind that a thesis is an arguable statement (not a fact and not a question).
• Your thesis is an enthymeme (claim + reason)
• In order to write a paper which has a focused and insightful thesis, you must compose a thesis that addresses one specific issue. Keep in mind that while your thesis is a claim, your supporting ideas will also be claims.
If focusing your thesis is difficult, consider the following:
• Find a connection between a subject you are currently studying and the issue you have chosen (e.g.: if you are studying economics, you might consider applying an economic theory you have learned to sustainability; if you are studying psychology, consider the rise in mental illness diagnoses among millennials ).
• You do not need a thesis to begin drafting; often students begin with an issue question (the question, however, is not a thesis); the answer is the thesis, and it is not uncommon to change your thesis while researching and writing.
Guidelines for Sources:
• A minimum of 3 of your sources must be articles from scholarly journals (library searches can be limited to such by checking peer review).
• Feel free to use sources from our text.
• Carefully scrutinize web sources. No more than half the sources you use may come from the Web. NOTE: articles from the online library databases are NOT counted as web sources.
Writing and Revising the Paper:
• As you write the paper you will be revising your own thinking and connecting it to the thinking and research of others. Your voice and your thoughts should dominate the paper.
• Ultimately, your paper will have a focused and insightful thesis which reflects your ideas. The final draft of the paper will focus on developing and supporting that thesis with your own reasoning and your sources (logos and ethos).
• As you write the paper, you will find that you will probably have to do more research. Expect to return to the library while working on drafts of the paper.
• Use APA parenthetical citations throughout the paper (these citations should be put into your paper as you write). Provide an APA reference page;
• Organize your paper based on the guidelines offered in chapters 10-12.
Audience:
• You will choose an audience. You may choose a neutral audience, a one sided proposal aimed at an audience friendly to the issue but either neutral or resistant to action, or an argument aimed at a resistant audience. You may NOT choose aggressive one-sided arguments (eg: preaching to the choir) and propaganda.
• You will also further narrow that audience to a specific group (e.g.: Missouri legislators, readers of Time Magazine, parents of primary school children, etc.). The more specifically you define your audience the better off you are.
Goals of the assignment:
• To formulate and argue for an insightful thesis.
• To analyze, synthesize and clearly incorporate into your paper sources which are
reliable and appropriate for your thesis.
• To practice using logic and ethos (maybe pathos) to support your claim.
• To learn about and practice crafting a persuasive document.
• To learn and utilize correct APA documentation.
• To think critically about an issue relevant to your world.
• To gain a deeper insight into your topic.
