Research Paper on The increase in illegal immigration
FINAL TERM RESEARCH PAPER STEPS:
TOPIC SENTENCE: The increase in illegal immigration is due to poverty.
Introduction: 1 paragraph to 1 page in length
Think of the introduction as a roadmap that tells the reader where they are and where they’re going. It should lead into the literature review.
An introductory paragraph that explains what your working topic and research question is
A forecast of key topics or texts that will appear in the literature review
REMINDER: Research Question vs Broad Topic:
Your research question: A project topic is different from a research question.
A topic is the broad subject of your work. Topics provide you with a sense of what secondary literature you want to look at. For instance, these are all examples of topics:
Homicide victims and offenders
A research question is what you want to know about the topic. Questions help you know what you want to pay attention to in the sources. For instance, these are all questions:
Have sex offender laws led to a decrease in sex offending?
Do gun control laws have an impact on the reduction of firearms?
What is the relationship between homicide victims and offenders?
( Body )Literature Review: 4-6 pages in length
This section is where you will utilize the work you did in the Annotated Bibliography, your references, and review the literature in regards to your research question. At this point you have also already completed a brief outline of your term research project. Remember that subheadings in this section will help to organize your arguments. Always keep your research question in mind.
Summarize and synthesize: Give an overview of the main points of each source and combine them into a coherent whole
Analyze and interpret: Don’t just paraphrase other researchers – add your own interpretations where possible, discussing the significance of findings in relation to the literature as a whole
Critically Evaluate: Mention the strengths and weaknesses of your sources
Write in well-structured paragraphs: Use transition words and topic sentences to draw connections, comparisons, and contrasts.
Suggestion for organizing your literature review:
Many of you already structured your OUTLINES in this format and it is probably the easiest to identify and follow.
Thematic: If you have found some recurring central themes that you will continue working with throughout your piece, you can organize your literature review into subsections that address different aspects of the topic. For example, if you are reviewing literature about capital punishment, key themes can include the effectiveness for deterrence and whether or not this is a morally justified means of punishment.
PRESENTING DATA IN YOUR TERM PROJECT:
During the semester, we have reviewed and practiced different formats for the presentation of quantitative data. The Data section of your project should include tables, charts, and figures (this what a chart/table is called when taken from your sources and inserted as an image in your assignment) that you have created using data about your project, and discussion of what your data shows.
1. Include the data tables, charts and figures in your Word document.
If you create a table or chart in Excel, SDA, etc. it must be included in the final Word report (see the project examples). Copy the table or chart into Word so that it can be presented as a page or pages of your work. SDA output can be copied and pasted into Word, too.
2. Number your Tables, Charts and other Graphics.
In a formal document, tables are numbered sequentially (Table 1, Table 2, etc.), charts are numbered sequentially (Chart 1, Chart 2, etc.) and any other graphic is called a figure (Figure 1, Figure 2, etc.)
3. Identify your sources.
Any time you include a statistic in written work, you must cite the source of the information. And, any data you include in a table or figure must also have the source identified. Not telling me where the data that is the basis for the table or chart came from will result in deductions!
4. Include your source files.
I want to see how you worked with the data, so you will upload your Excel files so I can check your work. Remember any SDA output tables will already be in the body of your paper.
The conclusion should be 1-3 pages in length.
A good conclusion should summarize what has been presented up until that point and it should suggest solutions to the problems or issues you’ve presented or suggestions for the future of policy or research.
Did you find support for your research question?
Was there something worth mentioning about your data?
Is there something about technology that could be applied to how we think about your topic, how it is researched and addressed by the larger criminal justice community?
Is there something you can suggest as a solution?
What do you see as the future of research in this area of study?
