- Practice experience Description
This practiceexperience builds on the skills obtained in MSN coursework leading up to nurse informatics practice experiencecourses. Through this practice experience, the student will continue to develop in the clinical/administrative role of the nurse informaticists. This practice experience provides opportunity to demonstrate mastery of the core competencies of the nursing informatics field (ANA, 2015) through identification of a problem, issue, or need in professional practice. A community assessment will be performed to identify the problem, issue or need at hand.
- Rationale
Nurses prepared as informaticists are called upon to provide informatics knowledge and clinical leadershipin a complex arena of educating future nursing professionals. This practice experience experience provides the MSN student with the opportunity, under the guidance of a experienced clinician, to explore, analyze, and refine mechanisms to implement technological strength. This module will provide the student with the ability to enhance his/her knowledge and skills of nursing informatics and preparation for the nurse informatics role.

Managing the Opioid Crisis: Taking the Lead
Goals and Objectives Review practice experience document first before writing goals and objectives. Create personal goals and objectives that can be met through this plan.
The purpose of these modules is to expand administrative and/or leadership perspectives related to the current opioid crisis. There are four separate modules designed to be completed separately or in total to earn practicum credit. Each module is worth 25 points.
Module I
(Worth 25 practicum hours)
Title: The History of the Opioid Crisis in the United States and Impact on Health
Objectives:
- Understand the history of the opioid crises that has influenced the shaping of the current policy related to opioid use (MSN Essentials VI, ANA Nursing Informatics, 1)
- Apply information published on the opioid crisis in shaping family and other social structures (MSN Essentials 1, ANA-Nursing Inform. 1, 4, 5)
- Create a chronology of the opioid crisis and discuss lessons learned that influence safe and effective pain management (MSN Essentials IV, ANA-Nursing Inform. 2,5, )
Directions:
- Secure resources (texts, Harvard website, current journals and so on) and discuss the history of the opioid crisis in the United States (for example the current crisis is the third crisis in the United States).
Harvard_Resources_Pain
- Identify common themes of the various crises across the identified time span that have contributed to the growth of an opioid crisis.
- Discuss the lessons learned through the crises, as you view them, and how those lessons could be used to alter policies related to the appropriate use of opioids for all citizens. Be sure to include political, economic, and social considerations for individuals, organizations, and government agencies (micro, meso, and macro levels).
- Secure 10-15 sources to support the development of this assignment.
- The assignment should be between 10-12 pages.

Defense Statements: (address all Defense Statements per the instructions above).
First Defense:
- The policies from the Joint Commission (2018) support proper pain management from the nursing perspective.
- The policies from the Joint Commission (2018) hinder proper pain management from the nursing perspective.
Second Defense:
- The nurse must take on the role of healthcare team leader in order to help manage the patient’s perception of his/her own pain experience.
- The nurse cannot take on the role of healthcare team leader since this is outside the realm of his/her scope of practice according to the ANA Nursing Scope and Standards for Practice document.
Third Defense:
- Safe houses are an effective and valid method for helping those with opioid addictions.
- Safe houses are one of the worst methods for helping those with opioid addictions.
Fourth Defense
- Providing access to clean syringes is one of the best methods for decreasing the spread of disease related to the opioid crisis.
- Providing access to clean syringes only increases the negative effects of the opioid crisis instead of decreasing the effects of the crisis
Module IV
(Worth 25 practicum hours)
Title: Crisis after Crisis….
Objectives:
- Recognize societal influence of the opioid crisis (DNP Essential II).
- Analyze the various results the opioid crisis has had on the culture. (DNP Essentials II, V).
- Evaluate how the current opioid crisis has cascaded to create other issues that impact healthcare. (DNP Essentials I, II,).
Directions:
The opioid crisis has had a significant impact on the current generation and generations to follow. For example the Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome, patients with chronic pain issues not receiving prescriptions any longer so they take to the streets for drugs, the inconsistencies in prescribing opioids for those in acute pain from surgery, procedures and so on).
- For each of the entities identified above, discuss the implications for administrators and/or providers in managing these situations beyond today. Discuss the implications for healthcare and needs moving forward and the impact on resources and the healthcare industry as a whole. Include other issues as you identify them in the literature.
