New religious Movements: an analysis of the beliefs and practices of Scientology

While many are critical of Scientology, practitioners of Scientology nevertheless identify themselves as part of a religious organization, and find meaning and purpose in the faith. Our effort here is to understand Scientology as a religion, by looking at a series of videos produced by the Church to promote awareness of its beliefs and practices.

Watch each video (they are less than five minutes, and you can just click on the hyperlink or go to the dropbox link) and then briefly identify in a list or a few sentences how eachtopictouches on one or more of thefive characteristics of religious belief.

1. Cosmology – What is the nature of physical and supernatural reality?
2. Anthropology – What is human nature, and why are we here?
3. Theodicy – Why is there evil/bad things in the world? What should we do about it?
4. Eschatology – What is the goal of human existence and the rest of reality?
5. Practice and community­– How are 1-4 expressed in ritual or social contexts within the religious community?
