Description
This assignment is based on the reading “What is Enlightenment,” by Immanuel Kant. I have attached the full reading of this as a PDF file, it is only 3 pages long. I also went ahead and included a brief summary of the Enlightenment to give you some background information, as well as to help your comprehension. The actual reading and the summary are labeled separately. When answering the required questions, you MUST only use evidence (quotes) from the 3-page reading, not the summary (that is just there to help you)
THERE ARE TWO PARTS TO THIS ASSIGNMENT.
PART (A) AND (B)
After reading the summary of the enlightenment FIRST and then reading the actual 3-page reading by Kant, you must then answer 2 questions in two VERY well-developed paragraphs with textual evidence (quotes) followed by strong analysis to support your statements.
PART (A)- Select ONE of the following four options and write a developed paragraph response to the questions in the selected option:
ONE PARAGRAPH FOR ONE CHOSEN OPTION BELOW EITHER 1,2, 3 OR 4. (Please choose the one you can write the strongest paragraph on with good textual evidence)
— Option 1) What does Kant mean by “enlightenment”? How does he define “nonage’? Why does he think enlightenment is hard to accomplish? Why is courage involved?
— — Option 2) What are the conditions for the gradual spread of enlightenment in a community? Why can’t a military revolution bring about an Enlightenment?
— — Option 3) What is Kant’s reaction to the idea of a church establishing a creed or unalterable set of fixed beliefs? Why do you think Kant focuses mainly on matters of religion as the center issue in Enlightenment?
— — Option 4) What pattern does Kant see in the relationship between a government’s power (or its degree of control over the populace) and the degree to which individuals can exercise their freedom?
— PART B – AND THEN, write a well-developed paragraph in response to the full prompt below, answering all aspects of it;
ANOTHER PARAGRAPH (this is your second) — What do you think Kant specifically means when he states, “Are we now living in an enlightened age? No, but we live in an age of enlightenment.”
(3). Do you think we are now living in an enlightened age? Why or why not? You must write TWO well-developed paragraphs in total. The first paragraph will be based on whatever option you choose 1-4, and the second paragraph will be the one stated in part B.
Both paragraphs must be VERY FORMALLY written, and demonstrate a proper understanding of the text. When citing — Example (Kant 2).
