Critical Analysis of Practice First placement
Supervision, Relationships and Reflection
Guidance
The aim of this CAP is to take a proactive stance towards preparing for supervision where the student will engage in critical thinking about social work practice, social work process, their knowledge, values, skills and professional development.
This will specifically link to PCF Domains 1 Professionalism, 2 Values and Ethics, 5 Knowledge and 6 Critical Reflection and should therefore include relevant theory and research.
This template has been developed from Davys and Beddoe ( 2010) Best Practice in Professional Supervision from their Reflective Learning Model and ‘One hundred and more questions’ and is to be shared with the Practice Educator before the supervision session.
Part 1 to be completed before supervision.
Part 2 to be completed before and after supervision.
Part 3 to be completed before and after supervision.
Part 4 to be completed for the following supervision.
PART 1 EVENT or ISSUE |
A brief outline of a practice issue you would like to bring to supervision. The issue should relate to the process of building a relationship with a colleague or service user.
|
I have developed my communication skill with the carer imminently between my first observation to latest one. However, I want to develop it further through more practice and interaction with carers and cared for by coming across different situation while conversing with them and the techniques to deal with such different situations. Furthermore, safeguarding alert is something that I have learn about and I am aware about different sort of abuse involved with safeguarding alert and its symptoms but I have not come across any safeguarding alert while conversing with carer so far and it is different to assess the safeguarding alert when one is interacting with carer face to face and over the phone and therefore I want to learn more about techniques to assess the safeguarding alert over the phone apart from sudden change in behaviour and whispering tendencies of the carer over the phone which is obviously suspicious and tends me to think that there might be something wrong with the carer or cared for.
Furthermore, during the welfare call with a daughter of a carer, I felt that she might be struggling with shopping and picking up prescription as she has been looking after their parents and her parents are not going outside due to shielding from coronavirus and therefore she is exposing herself and making herself vulnerable to coronavirus and hence I suggested her for NHS volunteers responders but she said she can manage the situation on her own and she will contact us in future if she may need any support.
|
Why have you brought this particular situation to supervision with your Practice Educator? |
In order to overcome the issues mentioned in previous section, I want to discuss these issues with my PE to further plan an appropriate road map to address the issues.
|
What do you want from your Practice Educator? |
I am looking forward for mentoring, resources, learning support from my PE to address the issues and so far the support and mentoring I have received from her has helped me to develop my communication and knowledge
|
PART 2 EXPLORATION
To be completed before supervision but revised/added to after supervision |
Returning to the relationship you identified in Part 1: how do you see your relationship with this person?
Who do they remind you of? How much of yourself do you see in them? |
While I was conversing with the daughter of one of the carer over the welfare call during my observation, I felt it in a way that I used to feel when I was caring for my sister and I can understand the struggle to manage everything in the house like medication, cleaning, little bit of cooking and outside like shopping, managing your own work.
As I can relate my own situation as a carer, it reminded me about my relationship with my sister who I cared for pretty long time who is suffering from schizophrenia and this made me more empathetic with this carer.
|
How were you feeling at the time?
How are you feeling now about this situation? How is it affecting your practice? |
As I have experienced similar situation in my past while taking care of my sister and therefore I can understand how challenging it is to manage household works, external works, personal needs and at the same time looking after your parents and their needs and this developed an extra empathy in me for the daughter of the carer whilst I was aware about professional approach towards the carer by not getting over emotional and discussing my personal situation with the carer and this links to PCF 1.
|
Have you been in this situation before? If so what has helped on previous occasions? |
During my first observation, I made one welfare call and the cared for was moving in to residential care due to alzheimer on the very same day and as the carer was the wife of cared for, she was pretty emotional and the situation was totally unexpected for me and hence I could not show the empathy required during that call. Moreover, after I ended up the call, I was aware that carer is not in the caring role and therefore I should I have updated the status of carer on LAS (Liquidlogic Adults’ Social Care System) but I got overwhelmed and did bot record the carer as a former on LAS. Having said that, I have developed my knowledge about in house services, local services and technical knowledge about LAS from than to now and communication in terms of showing empathy while speaking with carer and this is evident from my latest observation feedback.
|
What do you think might be going on for the other person? |
I think the daughter of the carer who is caring for their both parents has lots of thing to do on daily basis including her own job, traveling, shopping for their parents, and looking after their other needs. However, while I was conversing with her she did not sound like she is struggling with her role and after asking her more than once if she need any additional support in terms of shopping, picking up prescription or any other support in her caring role, she did not mention about any support that she may need and she sounded quite satisfied with all the support at place. However, when I called her, she was somewhere outside and even though she spent some time over the welfare call and she was happy and grateful for the welfare call and this makes me think that she was pretty satisfied with the services and she has no complains so far and when I asked her if she has our number in case she need them in future for any support, she happily asked me to text her the number on her mobile phone.
|
What is your greatest concern? |
If Covid 19 continues in long run, as a social worker it is difficult sometimes to assess the situation of carers and cared for over the phone in terms of safeguarding alert as well as there are some carers who are hard of hearing or maybe suffering from dementia which make it a bit difficult for us as a social worker to assess the situation appropriately or support them with their needs as well as it is struggling for carer and cared for to converse over the phone specifically those who are hard of hearing or has dementia to discuss about their need. Having said that, the pandemic situation can make the situation difficult struggling for carers and cared for in terms raising the safeguarding alert over the phone.
|
PART 3 EXPERIMENTATION – PLANNING
To be completed before and after supervision |
What are you going to do?
What are you going to say? Where are you going to start? |
In order to improve my communication more with carer, I want to practice more on welfare calls and want to learn more about local services, social work theories and motivational interviewing and as I will start interacting more and more with the carers it will help me to come across different situation of carers as every carer and their situation is different and this will help me in developing my communication and knowledge about local services and theories.
|
What would you like to be the outcome?
|
The best outcome would be when I will be able to support carers and service users with all possible support with their needs through my communication with empathy, knowledge about local services and theories which will eventually help me in identifying the needs of carers and cared for and this leads to support them with their needs in all possible way.
Furthermore, I want to learn about the case load management and how to meet the targets if there is any as this will help me enhance my performance as a professional.
|
What are you afraid might happen? |
As the restrictions due to pandemic does not allow us to make home visit to carers for assessment and this makes it challenging to assess the carer needs appropriately in order to support them properly as well as in assessing safeguarding alert and therefore I am afraid, if this will impact my learning experience.
|
What resources/support do you need? |
Mentoring, resources, learning support, carer assessment shadowing
|
What will you do if nothing changes?
What contingency plan do you have in mind? |
|
What areas will you have to work on – knowledge, skills and values |
|
