The strategic technology plan is a guide to how the organization will use technology to help accomplish its goals. The plan is created with a scope of up to 3 years and should be updated frequently.

Write the overall mission of the organization, what it seeks to do with its efforts. Ex: “To provide state of the art health care local, state and regional clients, etc”
Write a short paragraph in which you describe critical information about the organization. Ex (some may not be applicable):
Record information about each person who contributed to the content of the document. Details can be entered in tabular or paragraph form.

Describe each major business process in the organization that contributes to achieving your goal. Process descriptions must be in the form of a narrative but can include flow chart, table, etc. to illustrate a point.
Describe improvements that can be made with the supporting use of technology. For example:
Write down the present state of the organization’s technology. This should be in paragraph form and may include bulleted lists.
Indicate if:
Describe the technology improvements that are needed to support the business process improvements that were identified earlier.
Be specific in listing the desired solution, the benefit it would produce and an estimate of the cost.
Ex: “New Computers”-‐ number of replacement computers, specifications and cost (amount of RAM, storage, video cards, bandwith requirements, etc) will allow for more or entirely new applications to be used or used at the same time, which in turn will allow more productive because of . . . .
It is important to get as much input from staff as possible when planning for your organization’s technology needs. Among other considerations, this input will allow you to plan for any necessary training that accompanies the improvements, upgrades, etc.
Write the overall annual budget amount the organization should dedicate to Technology. This amount should be consistent with the detailed IT Budget included at the end of the plan.
Ex: Shelter for Women Inc., Total IT Budget 20XX, $12,000.00
Describe in a narrative form but using relevant quantitative data, how you will measure the success of your technology-‐supported process improvements.
Ex: Time required to process MRI scans can be reduced by X minutes, allowing for a net gain of Y MRI’s per quarter; enhanced image handling capabilities allow for greater accuracy in reading scans, allowing for . . . , etc.
Detailed list of all anticipated items and costs associated with the plan.
List of any sources cited or used in the report.
