Cherokee Constitution (1827)

Essay (60pts): You will answer both questions below for a total of 60 points.  You will need to develop full and complete essays with thesis statements and evidence that supports clear arguments.  Use evidence from lectures and readings.  Awareness of historical chronology is important.

1. The events known to historians as “Cherokee Removal” are very complex. Write an essay that describes how the Cherokee attempted to fight removal (1820s-1838), why the white Georgians wanted them to remove, why a prominent faction of the Cherokee were willing to remove, and what was at stake for the larger nation. As a part of this essay, construct an argument that demonstrates what was most significant about these events and their legacy.  (In other words, what does it teach us and why does it still matter today)

2. Ella Cara Deloria’s Waterlily is a story about kinship. Using evidence and examples from the novel, demonstrate how this story illustrates the centrality of kinship to all of Dakota society.
