Yellowdig Discussion Board
Post two reforms to the Yellowdig Discussion Board and reply to two group members.
Minimum word count for reforms: 200 words
Minimum word count for replies: 50 words
In the Yellowdig Discussion Board that concludes this course (your final project), you will reflect
back on what you consider the two most pressing or critical issues that caught your attention
and provide for your discussion group reforms to address the issues.
Your Yellowdig Discussion Board will have about 12 other group members who also post two
reforms. To complete the assignment, you will a) write and post two reforms and b) reply to
two discussion board group members about their ideas for reform. Each of your proposed
reforms will have three segments:
1. A media link accompanied with an explanation of the issue and an explanation of
classification (space and problem)
a. The issue can be broad or specific, and you can pull any media you have
reviewed in previous discussion boards from the course (the unit discussion
boards are open for you to revisit the media posts; your groups in the Yellowdig
Discussion Board are different from the Canvas Discussion Boards)
b. Your explanation of the issue should be brief (e.g., “Overuse injuries in youth
sports are an avoidable problem that drives kids out of sport … win at all costs
…”)
c. List clearly the Yellowdig topic tags you classify your reform under
2. A reform statement and 3 prongs
a. Your statement should clearly identify, in one sentence, exactly what your
reform is – you can provide more support or explanation of the exact proposal,
but your statement should read as one inclusive reform statement (somewhat
like what you wrote for the purpose statement of the Title IX extension you
composed in the gender unit paper).
b. Provide (at least) three prongs that explain how/where your reform will be
implemented. Each prong should address a different element of the issue; the
prongs should read as the core of your reform – they will be exactly how you
intend to deliver the reform statement.
3. A funding source
a. Get creative here. If your reform has a cost associated with it, explain how it will
be paid for (e.g., gambling revenues, college sport media subsidy, pro franchise
land tax, … avoid government funding – try to come up with a novel idea for
funding).
For successful completion of the assignment, you must achieve 300 points in the Yellowdig
discussion platform:
• two reforms, set at a minimum of 200 words each
o 100 points per reform; 200 points total
o Each reform must be associated with at least one ‘topic’ (e.g., youth sports,
athlete health and safety, …)
• two replies, set at a minimum of 50 words each
o 50 points per reply; 100 points total
*Your 300 points will be graded on a 30-point scale in Canvas
EXAMPLE REFORM (*This is an outline of an example, you will need to write your reforms in
brief essay form. We recommend you compose your reforms in a Word doc then copy and
paste into the Yellowdig platform):
1. Media link, explanation of issue and explanation of classification (space and problem):
a. Issue: overuse injuries in youth sport (*insert* link to media report on injuries
among kids; “Overuse injuries in youth sports are an avoidable problem that
drives kids out of sport … win at all costs …”)
b. Tagged in YD as ‘Athlete Health and Safety’ and ‘Youth Sport’ for the associated
topics (you are required to tag topics in the board)
2. A reform statement x 3 prongs:
a. Statement: mandate for youth leagues (NOT youth sport programs, but the
leagues or any organizing body that schedules youth sport competitions) to
centralize measures and benchmarks for ensuring youth athlete safety to
decrease overuse injuries among youth athletes
b. Prong 1: coaching education program [online training in overuse injuries,
certification for child development]
c. Prong 2: medical trainer in staff (league) [monitors check in’s/collects data and is
on call/at fields/point of contact] (*this is a prong that would require ample
funding)
d. Prong 3: parent guidelines [in welcome packet on role in triad and online
webinar trainings offered for allyship with their youth]
3. Funding source:
a. Leagues in privatized youth sport typically run by volunteers, but have org fees
paid into them as the organizing entity
i. funding for coaching ed, parent ed, and an athletic trainer would be
derived from two sources:
1. a member fee for the youth organization playing in the league
2. the profits from a youth tournament conducted by the league
annually
Instructions on how to post to the Yellowdig Discussion Board:
1. To create a Post, select the +CREATE button in the upper-right hand corner of your
Community. (As you scroll through your Feed, the +CREATE button will appear in the
lower-right hand corner.) From here, you can add a title in the “Title your Post” field and
add your thoughts or content into the field below that. You will attach your media
directly to your reform post. When you’re ready to submit your Post, select the POST
button.
2. To comment on someone’s Post, hover over the Post until you see a Comment button in
the lower-right hand corner of the Post and select it. Creating a Comment works just like
a Post. To submit your Comment, select the POST COMMENT button.
3. As you type a Post or Comment in Yellowdig, a yellow bar at the bottom will move to
the right indicating your progress toward the word count minimum. When the bar turns
green, you’ve reached your word minimum and submitting after that will earn you
points.
4. For studying or to find something specific, you can search for specific Posts, collapse or
expand Posts, filter Posts by various attributes, and sort your Feed by selecting the
respective buttons next to the +CREATE button. Clicking on a topic tag in the platform
will filter the feed by only that topic. Multiple filters can be used together to find
increasingly specific content.
5. ‘My Participation’ shows your participation toward the point limit and how close you are
to the 100% participation goal. On that page is also your point log. If you think you are
not getting points you should, check there first. The most common reasons for people
not getting points they think they are entitled to are: 1) They already exceeded the
point maximum, 2) their Post or Comment was not long enough, or 3) their community
required them to post using certain topics. You will not get points for giving out or
receiving reactions to other members, but you can select to “like” a member’s post or
comment
