Paragraph 1: Basic information about your visit. You should include the name of the museum you visited, its location, the date and time of your visit, and if you went alone or with a group. Then briefly describe the museum itself and your overall impression of its design/layout and its collection of art. You may want to consider questions such as: How was the museum laid out? What were the major time periods or styles represented? Was there a broad variety ofart or was there an emphasis on a particular style or artist?
Paragraph 2: Your personal response. You may want to consider questions such as: What was your overall experience like? Was this your first time at this particular museum? Did you enjoy it? Why or why not? Was it what you expected? Why or why not? What was the best thing about your visit? What might have been improved? How does the experience of seeing art in person differ from seeing images in your textbook or online?
Paragraph 3: Critical evaluation of a work of art and connection to the course material. You should select a work of art from the museum and then describe, discuss, analyze, and compare it to other works of art from the course. It may be your favorite work of art in the museum or just a work of art that caught your eye. You should provide the title, artist, date, period/style, and artistic medium (painting, sculpture, etc). Next, briefly describe the image. Most importantly, evaluate the work of art based upon the characteristics of the particular movement or medium. For example, if it is a Baroque painting, what elements does it contain that make it representative of the Baroque movement/style? What elements does it share with another work of art from the same movement discussed in the course? Or, as another example, if it is a Hellenistic sculpture, what characteristics distinguish it as a Hellenistic sculpture? You will inevitably get some information about the work of art from the placard next to it in the museum but base your critical evaluation of the work on what you have learned in the course. If you take any information from the placard or museum website, please make sure it is cited and documented properly.
