Transfer Assignment 2: Speech for Change
COM101: Communicating across Contexts
(Summer 2020)
Scenario:
Imagine that you are a member of the Canadian Coalition of Municipalities Against Racism and Discrimination (part of the Canadian Commission for UNESCO). In keeping with the Coalition’s mandate to “build inclusive communities,” members often visit schools and community events to spread the word about how to build more inclusive communities. You have just been invited to be the guest speaker at a local high school where you will be talking to a group of students (ages 14-18) about
(1) the importance of preventing racism and/or discrimination and/or bullying
in their community and (2) practical ways to achieve this.
Instructions:
- Think about your audience and purpose.
- Based on your audience, purpose, and general message, consider what language and tone will be most appropriate for appealing to your listeners. Consider how you will support your message and what persuasive appeals
you will use.
- Write your speech for the high school students with whom you will be meeting. Please follow these steps as you develop your speech:
- Provide a greeting and “hook”: Acknowledge your audience. How will you meaningfully connect with them?
- Establish the problem: What is the situation that you are addressing? Why? Provide some background and/or real examples. (Examples could be personal or general or situations you have observed.)
- Suggest actions: What specific actions do you suggest to your young audience for helping them make a difference in their community?
- Encourage and inspire: Why are the actions and behaviour of your young audience so important? How will you instill confidence in them
and in their abilities to “build inclusive communities”?
- Aim for about 400-500 words (double spaced). No research or citations are required though you may cite one of the class texts (of Weeks 9-12) if you wish to. Please also ensure that your work is 100% your own and that you respect Seneca’s Academic Integrity Policy.
- Please submit your speech through Blackboard (see theAssignmentstab on the main menu) as a Word file byTuesday, August 4 2020, at 6pm (EST).
