Guidelines:

Please read chapter 1 and use the points below as a guide to write a reflection paper on the role early Islam played in Middle Eastern politics.

1. In an introductory paragraph, sum up the beginnings of Islam, focusing on the most significant actors and institutions. Justify how and why you determine significant actors and institutions

.  2. What was the nature of the relations among the early Islamic community, Jews, and Christians? Why was this relationship different from the one among the Umma, non-Christians and non-Jewish groups in the area?

3. For the rest of the paper, discuss what you consider to be the most important contributions made by Islam to the early political arrangements in the region. Give reasons for the contributions you chose as the most important.

4. In reading chapter 1, what surprised you the most about Islam and the period it emerged in?
