FORMAT
Exams should be typed and double-spaced using 12 pt. font. Answers should be numbered and should be uploaded as a single document to Turnitin. DIRECTIONS This exam covers material from Week 5 and Week 6.
The exam has two (2) parts. Part 1 consists of four (4) short answer questions. Answers to short answer questions should be around 2-4 sentences. Part 2 consists of two (2) comparison essays. Comparison essays should be around 1-2 paragraphs. Artworks should be fully identified (artist (if known), title and date).
Answers must be written entirely in your own words—if you copy directly from the textbook, internet, PowerPoints or any other source you will be required to redo the exam. Do not use quotes. Essays should be free from typos, spelling errors, etc. PART 1: SHORT ANSWER QUESTIONS (40 points) Answer ALL four (4) questions. Answers should be around 2-4 sentences.
Question 1. What aspects of Michelangelo’s David (1501-1504) are characteristic of Italian Renaissance art? (10 points)
Question 2. Which Impressionist painting from Week 6 PowerPoint 2 do you think best embodies the characteristics of Impressionism? Why? (10 points)
Question 3: Explain the relationship of Jacques-Louis David’s Oath of the Horatii (1785) to Enlightenment thought and Classical art. (10 points)
uestion 4: How does Turner’s painting Snowstorm: Hannibal and His Army Crossing the Alps (1812) evoke the concept of the sublime? (10 points) PART 2: COMPARISON ESSAYS (60 points) Complete BOTH comparison essays. Essays should be around 1-2 paragraphs.
Comparison Essay 1. Write an essay comparing and contrasting Caravaggio’s Entombment (1600-1604) and Rembrandt’s The Company of Captain Frans Banning Cocq (The Night Watch) (1642). Discuss the similarities and differences between the two works of art. Make sure to consider the following: subject matter, style, medium, and formal elements of the works as well as the intended meaning/purpose and historical context.
