In a 3-5 page essay following MLA 8th style and formatting addressed to an academic audience and drawing evidence from at least 5 scholarly sources, write ananalytical essay with informative moments that seeks to understand the cause or effects of an event, trend, or phenomenon worthy of academic exploration.
Be sure to include a thesis statement demonstrates your goal of offering a critical interpretation of primary and secondary sources that ultimately support your analysis of the topic. Remember: whereas the purpose of an argumentative essay is to persuade the purpose of an analytical essay is to present an interpretation. Write in such a way that the essay follows the analytical mode throughout, includes compelling moments of informing, draws logical support from scholarly sources, proposes a focused interpretation supported by evidence from scholarly sources, and includes a properly formatted Works Cited page. Although you can use the first person “I” throughout, please be sure to adhere to genre conventions and to write for an academic audience.
NOTE: The grading rubric for this assignment is the same as the grading rubric for the Research Essay: Final Draft. However, this assignment is worth half as much as the final draft, and rough draft standards are different than final draft standards.
NOTE: Keep in mind that the rough draft is intended as a learning exercise. Therefore, grading for the final draft will be more stringent because expectations will be higher. That is, just because you score an “A”/50 on the rough draft doesn’t mean you will score an “A”/100 on the final draft.
