Background

In the aftermath of the global financial crisis of 2007 / 2008, commentators identified a number of potential contributory factors at both a macroeconomic level and at an institutional or individual level.

Requirement

In the context of the global financial crisis, identify FOUR contributory factors underpinning the crisis and critically evaluate their individual contributions in order to arrive at some conclusions regarding their overall significance.

§  Students are required to write an essay.

§  Word count: 2,000 words +/- 10%. The word count excludes references, headings and tables.

§  You must put the word count at the end of the report.

§  Use Times New Roman as the font style, with size 12 as the font size and fully justify the text.

§  You should base the discussion and support your views / arguments / conclusions by reference to the thoughts of others that you will have read in the literature.

§  You should also support your views and statements that you make by providing, where appropriate, up-to-date examples from the banking / regulatory and financial services sector;

§  Correct use of the Harvard referencing system is required and all sources used must be fully acknowledged in the essay and its reference list

§  Plagiarism is a serious offence and will be dealt with, where appropriate, under the University regulations.

70+% (1^st class grade)

• Demonstration of comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the issues surrounding the financial crisis
• Substantial evidence of both breadth and depth of research, from a variety of relevant academic, regulatory, bank specific and press sources, on the topic area
• Critical evaluation of the topic area with reference to relevant literature
• A comprehensive discussion of the issues surrounding the topic area, involving clarity of academic argument, coherence, leading to supported recommendations and conclusions
• Excellent presentation skills contributing to a clear, focussed, appropriately structured essay with appropriate references and appendices

60-69% (2.1 grade)

• Demonstration of a good level of knowledge and understanding of the issues surrounding the financial crisis
• Evidence of both breadth and depth of research, from a variety of relevant academic, regulatory, bank specific and press sources, on the topic area
• Critical evaluation of the topic area with reference to relevant literature
• A good level of discussion of the issues surrounding the topic area, involving clarity of academic argument, coherence, leading to supported recommendations and conclusions
• Good presentation skills contributing to a clear, focussed, appropriately structured essay with appropriate references and appendices

50-59% (2.2 grade)

• Demonstration of some level of knowledge and understanding of the issues surrounding the financial crisis
• Some evidence of both breadth and depth of research, from relevant academic, regulatory, bank specific and press sources, on the topic area
• Some critical evaluation of the topic area with reference to relevant literature
• A limited level of discussion of the issues surrounding the topic area, involving some clarity of academic argument, coherence, leading to some supported recommendations and conclusions
• Adequate presentation skills contributing to a largely clear, focussed, appropriately structured essay with appropriate references and appendices

40-49% (3^rd class grade)

• Demonstration of a limited level of knowledge and understanding of the issues surrounding the financial crisis
• Little evidence of either breadth or depth of research, from relevant academic, regulatory, bank specific and press sources, on the topic area
• Limited evidence of critical evaluation of the topic area with reference to relevant academic literature
• A limited level of discussion of the issues surrounding the topic area, involving limited levels of academic argument, coherence, leading to limited / unsupported recommendations and conclusions
• Poor or inappropriate presentation skills contributing to a lack of clarity, unfocussed, or inappropriately structured essay with inappropriate / limited references and appendices

Fail

• No real demonstration of knowledge and understanding of the issues surrounding the financial crisis
• Little or no real evidence of either breadth or depth of research, from  relevant academic, regulatory, bank specific and press sources, on the topic area
• Limited or no evidence of critical evaluation of the topic area with reference to relevant academic literature
• Limited or no real discussion of the issues surrounding the topic area, involving limited or no real academic argument, coherence, leading to limited or no recommendations and/or conclusions
• Poor or inappropriate presentation skills contributing to a lack of clarity, unfocussed, or inappropriately structured essay with inappropriate / limited references and appendices
