Annotated Bibliography – Social Penetration Theory

The annotated bibliography is a list of academic journal articles with an annotation or a brief description. The annotated bibliography will serve as a building block for your literature review assignment. THREE of the five sources you use must come from communication journals. All articles must be research studies as described in the course materials. Do not use conference papers, theoretical essays, metatheoretical analyses, dissertations, or book chapters. All articles must be based on a communication theory contained in the textbook and/or in the course materials.

The articles should be grounded in one theory. Do not use any articles for this assignment that are listed in a course assignment sheet or in an example of a course assignment. If you have questions about whether or not an article is appropriate for the assignment, please ask your instructor. In addition to helping you to create a literature review, the assignment is designed to increase your familiarity and comfort with APA (American Psychological Association) style and to learn how to communicate complex information concisely.

Each source must be cited in accurate APA style. Inaccurate citations will be marked incorrect regardless of the number of errors. To help you improve your citation style, if your APA is marked incorrect, it is up to you to determine the specific problem. Entries must be arranged alphabetically by author last name as outlined in APA and the document should be titled References as you would a traditional reference page.

Each entry should include an annotation – a brief description of the article below the citation. This description should summarize what the authors did in the research, the theory that frames the research, what the authors found after conducting the study and what those findings mean for our understanding of the variables/topics/theories under study and/or communication more generally. Do not copy the abstract from the online database. Doing so is plagiarism and will not help you to understand the content of the article.

The annotation should specify the following information

• Theory used

• Research topic and how the authors justify its importance for the reader

• Specific variables/topics/texts/context being studied

• Specific findings and the implications of those findings It would also be helpful to include a sentence about how this article will contribute to your literature review.

Each annotation must be 75-150 words, not including the APA citation. Examples of annotated citations can be found on the next page.  Examples: Below are examples of well-crafted entries. Johnson, D. I., & Lewis, N. (2010). Perceptions of swearing in the work setting: An expectancy violations theory perspective. Communication Reports, 23, 106-118. Johnson and Lewis used expectancy violation theory to examine the perception of swearing in the work place.

Their study examined different types of relationships with participant coworkers versus a supervisor factoring in age, gender and degree of surprise and perception of speaker incompetence. The results showed that swearing was more unexpected in certain situations such as a formal event versus an informal event. Certain phrases were also found to be more unexpected than others. The relationship of the speaker did not appear to influence the perceptions of swearing. Subsequently, communication practices in the workplace, and the expectations associated with such practices are based on context and type of unexpected phrase rather than speaker perceptions. Ramirez, A & Wang, Z (2008).

When online meets offline: An expectancy violations theory perspective on modality switching. Journal of Communication, 58, 20-39. Ramirez and Wang used expectancy violation theory to examine the effects that switching communication styles from online to face-to-face have on the development of a relationship. To do so, they examined the amount of time each pair of participants studied had to become acquainted with one another, expectedness behavior and physical appearance of participants, evaluation of behavior and physical appearance, importance of interaction, and impact on uncertainty. The results showed that virtual partners may develop exaggerated expectations for each other. They also began to idealize the impressions of each other.

This suggests that the longer individuals spend communicating online prior to a face-to-face interaction, the less likely they may be to like one another as a result of exaggerated impressions and the tendency of persons to create idealized versions of the person with whom they are communicating online.
