DIRECTIONS: There are 5 questions to review; your job is to choose ONE (1) from EACH category. Each question requires a 2 paragraph response of 200-250 words PER PARAGRAPH, (400-500 words total for each response).
Category A – Theme and Current Connections — CHOOSE ONE!
- State a theme from your text. A theme is a COMPLETE SENTENCE about an aspect of life that applies to the story read and to present-day, real life. Prove the theme with TWO (2) examples of text support and discuss what a 21st century audience can learn from reading the book.
- Discuss a current-day social issue, problem, or struggle that many people currently experience. Provide a specific example of the struggle and how people cope or deal with it today. How could the author of your text improve or change the way people deal with the same problem today? Provide TWO (2) examples from the text as support for your choices.
- Why is it important for us to understand the experiences and views of other people? How can another person teach us something about ourselves? Provide TWO (2) examples from the text as support for your response, making sure to relate the text to the idea of helping another person through his/her struggles.
Category B – Rhetorical Choice and Author’s Strategy — CHOOSE ONE!
- Choose ONE (1) of the literary devices you found in the text and discuss its effect on the audience. Provide TWO (2) examples of the device as support from the text and explain how the presence of the device helped the audience understand an aspect of the text.
- Choose ONE (1) conflict you identified in the text and discuss what the author learned from enduring the difficult experience. Provide TWO (2) examples from the text as support for your response and explain what the audience can learn from witnessing the author struggle.
