SARS-CoV-2 is defined as the novel variant of the Corona virus that is responsible for the pandemic. COVID-19 is the name of the disease people get when they are infected with the SARS-CoV-2 agent.
In a manner of weeks, the novel SARS-Corona virus (SARS-CoV-2) went from being a relatively new and emerging pathogento the causative agent in the COVID-19 global pandemic unprecedented in recent history (apart from the 1918 Influenza Epidemic). Since it is such a new pathogen, the amount of information about this Corona virus variant was very limited at the beginning of the pandemic. This situation has created a very unique window in which scientific research and discovery is unfolding in real time. These discoveries are occurring in basic scientific as well as medical research. Examples of basic research include studies on this Corona virus variant and its structure and biology-how it infects cells and what happens as a way of learning how to fight and inactivate the virus. Ongoing medical research includes studies on how COVID-19 manifests in different patients: who may become seriously ill or at risk while others are asymptomatic carriers. The development of a vaccine and potential therapeutic agents is a very active area at the intersection of basic research and medicine. Finally, the COVID-19 pandemic has generated innovation in other areas of society including: COVID testing; personal protective equipment; cleaning products; electronic applications for public health and working remotely.
